"LIKE white men playing soul music, jazz is a niche market these days. But at least you can be assured the intentions of Australian jazz players are pure, since no one goes into it for the money or the bling. Good jazz is always being played on stage somewhere but there has certainly been a resurgence in recorded work in Australia.

Somewhere at the top of this pile is the excellent The Mothership plays the Music of Mike Nock by the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra (Jazzgroove Records), featuring youthful players including guitarist James Muller, pianist Sean Wayland and a 14-piece brass section.

Nock established his reputation working in the US as pianist and composer for 25 years, continuing to expand his massive catalogue and mentor a new generation of players from his Sydney base for the past 20 years.

Muller's fleet fingers come to the fore on Floating Cloud, Flowing Water and solos from Phil Slater (trumpet) and David Theak (alto) light the way across the cool textures of Doors.

Certainly big-band jazz collectives are not easy to assemble in Australia, so it's a thumbs up to the Australia Council and Jazzgroove for supporting the project and ensuring the music of one of our leading jazz composers is given the fresh treatment it richly deserves."
