Leaf Blower brings together jazz, rock and electronic elements with a focus on composition and melody. The players are vibrant and assured, creating an edgy and engaging momentum. The tenor flutters, growls, blares and rasps; it shrieks in horror, bounces happily, cries with anguish and murmurs tenderly. Hooks are shared between bass and sax and the drums solo exquisitely.
Inspired by cites and urban life, Leaf Blower is a response to contemporary issues and world events. While some songs specify Los Angeles, Leaf Blower speaks to any landscape characterised by disconnection, yet where hope remains in riots and poetry found in corners.
Aunty Richard achieves an uncanny, measured sound that maintains a live, spontaneous feel. Leaf Blower is an album that never lets you get too comfortable. There is calm, but anarchy is soon to follow; the band provides pause for reflection one moment and a call-to-arms the next. Sometimes desolate, more often manic – Leaf Blower is the soundtrack for every city.
