Stay warm with like-minded Sydney jazz hipsters

Like the Mamas & The Papas sang it, all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Ok, but Sydney is still a stunning town when the sun sets early, and an early sunset means even you early birds are shrouded in darkness entering your favourite Surry Hills place of entertainment. No, not the strip club upstairs.

Leading us down the windy slope to winter are old label favourites Leonie Cohen and Informal Troupe, stage regulars Amphibious and Showa 44 and an exciting new collection of familiar people, Greening From Ear to Ear.

Down at winter base camp, our June lineup sees the return of the ADs Pick; an allstar lineup paying a long-awaited tribute to the music of Roger Frampton, and those ripening chestnuts of Sydney music, Mike Nock and Jeremy Sawkins.

July 2010

What a year it’s been! From the dire nights during the GFC to a brass marching band pumping the summer streets of Surry Hills, and a new venue originally licensed for a little more than just jazz. Jazzgroove at 505 is returning to its true meaning of a place where ‘Jazz meets everything else’. And many new people are meeting Jazzgroove: alive, raw and world class Sydney jazz.

The recent AGM discussed activities reports that even through the tough times of financial crisis (making punters forego live music), and completely self-funding our first Jazzgroove festival, seeing the organisation come out satisfyingly in the black. We had a change of Administrator, and thank Kerri Glasscock for her enduring efforts, hard work and dedication to Jazzgroove and the inception of the first Jazzgroove festival. Kerri has handed over to Anna Riddel, who will also be our label manager. We also saw a new Secretary on the committee in Caroline Davis, as outgoing secretary Anna Riddel took up the position of Administrator.

The Artistic Direction of outgoing ADs John Hibbard and Matthew Ottignon was superb as they programmed the best of all types of jazz in Sydney, as well as interstate and internationally. Many young players debuted at Jazzgroove including Casey Golden and Carl Morgan. The committee recognises and applauds the commitment of the Artistic Directors for their work over the past two years and in programming the first Jazzgroove festival. We all look forward to continuing to be guided by their wisdom as the new artistic directors take their place.

Jazzgroove successfully continued our bi-monthly residency at the Basement for our album launches and saw six new releases from Jazzgroove Records.

The year now continues with many fresh new faces on the committee. We thank outgoing members for their commitment and perseverance through some difficult times. In particular we thank outgoing president Carl Dewhurst, as well as members Cameron Undy (founding member), Matt Keegan, Tim Stocker and Jamie Cameron.

Jazzgroove now welcomes its committee members to their new positions and also those newly appointed. John Hibbard is the new president for Jazzgroove, Matt McMahon remains Vice President, Andrew Woods remains treasurer and Caroline Davis continues as Secretary. Newly appointed committee member Dave de Vries joins continuing member James Loughnan as the new Artistic Directors. Matt Ottignon contines as a committee member, joining him are newly elected Alison Flett and Simon Ferenci.

Many thanks to everyone who has been involved with, and supported Jazzgroove over the past year, we could not have done it without you. To everyone who has volunteered, worked for and most of all to those of you who come to the gigs, thank you. We look forward to many exciting developments in the year ahead as we continue to grow at 505. See you at the gig!
