Stay warm with like-minded Sydney jazz hipsters

Like the Mamas & The Papas sang it, all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Ok, but Sydney is still a stunning town when the sun sets early, and an early sunset means even you early birds are shrouded in darkness entering your favourite Surry Hills place of entertainment. No, not the strip club upstairs.

Leading us down the windy slope to winter are old label favourites Leonie Cohen and Informal Troupe, stage regulars Amphibious and Showa 44 and an exciting new collection of familiar people, Greening From Ear to Ear.

Down at winter base camp, our June lineup sees the return of the ADs Pick; an allstar lineup paying a long-awaited tribute to the music of Roger Frampton, and those ripening chestnuts of Sydney music, Mike Nock and Jeremy Sawkins.

The JARA Award is upon us. It's a package valued at $10,000 for the recording, post production and promotion of an album to be released through Jazzgroove Records. We think it's a great way to stimulate some creative activity amongst our little scene. Entry requirements are below.

This week at Jazzgroove, an exciting initiative from our Artistic Directors, James Loughnan and Dave de Vries. They have invited a pick up band of superb musos to interprete the compositions of renowned Sydney saxophonist Bernie McGann. The music might head absolutely anywhere with the likes of Carl Dewhurst, Alister Spence, Craig Scott and James Waples in attendance. An intriguing, multi generational lineup, electric with potential.

Also, a performance by youngsters the Midnight Tea Party. At 8:30. Political affiliation uncertain and hopefully irrelevant.

Summer is just around the corner and with it, a summer program worthy of the heat, pick up the new flyer at the show.

Cheers

April 2011
Well 2011 has flown by so quickly we have barely had time to catch up on all the news. After the smashing success of our second annual Summer Festival 14-16 January 2011 we have been flat chat presenting gigs at our much loved home venue 505 and releasing more fantastic music. Our old Administrator and Festival Co-Ordinator Kerri Glasscock has returned from maternity leave, we send out a big thanks to Anna Riddel and Ben Pierpoint who filled in. We are currently spending our time training up new volunteers (we always need a helping hand so if you're keen drop Kerri a line admin@jazzgroove.com) and we have begun preliminary programming for the next Summer Festival, phew!

The biggest news of the month however is that two of our 2010 CD releases BAZ and The Subterraneans have been shortlisted for this years Bell Awards! This is awesome news and we wish Aaron Flower and James Ryan both a big bag of good luck.
