Jazzgroove Program
February 2010

John Hibbard

Tuesday 2 February
10pm- Sidecar

John Hibbard - trombone
Aaron Flower - guitar
Ben Waples - bass
Evan Mannell - drums

As the musicians of Sidecar attain the blessed stability of maturity, having survived the turmoils of adolescence and the middle class peculiarity of post-adolescence, their individual musicianship has become ever more muscular, assured and deep. The familiar frame of the now nostalgic Sidecar set provides a thrilling measurement of its member's progress.

Fantastic Terrific Munkle
8:30pm- The Fantastic Terrific Munkle

Martin Kay - clarinets
Julian Curwin - guitar, banjo
Sam Golding - tuba, trumpet
Danny Heifetz - drums

Munkle bring their blend of chamber jazz, punk tango and dinky swing back to the Jazzgroove stage. Featuring players from Darth Vegas, Invisible City, The Tango Saloon, Mike Nock and others.

Tuesday 9 February (Album Launch)
10pm- Kim Lawson Trio

Kim Lawson - saxes
Steve Hunter - bass
James Hauptmann - drums

Almost a year of workshopping launches the Kim Lawson Trio into their debut album “Alive and Kicking”. The album delivers a set of meticulous compositions; each piece having its own identity, being tightly framed and concise, yet with space built-in for improvisation and the expression of each member of the trio.  Although drawing from jazz, classical, funk and various other sources, the trio succeeds completely in having its own sound.

8:30pm- The Thunder Trio

Brendan Clarke - bass
Carl Dewhurst - guitar
Colin Hoorweg - drums

The Thunder Trio are coming to Jazzgroove! After wowing audiences at the Hollywood and the Hippo bar in 09, these guys are ready to rock out at 505. Combining groove classics, originals and jazz standards, The Thunder Trio put their groove stamp on whatever they play. Clarkey and Dewey have been playing together for well over a decade now and are honored to be playing with their hero and mentor, Canberra resident Colin Hoorweg.

Tuesday 16 February
10pm-
Girth

James Loughnan - tenor sax
Glenn Doig - rhodes
Karl Dunnicliff - bass
Paul Derricott - drums

After a year's decommission Girth is back, with a fresh cargo of new tunes, as well as some that have been busy maturing deep in the hull. They will skirt the treacherous shoals of free jazz, grunge jazz, euro-trash and groove. The crew, buoyed up by a year of other musical voyages, are ready to go the whole nine yards, even if it means someone ends up scrubbing the poop deck.

8:30pm- Adam Pache Quartet

Adam Pache - drums
James Muller - guitar
Gerard Masters - keys
Jonathan Zwartz - bass

After four years in New York, Adam is now based in Rome, where he trades heirloom tomatoes for hard currency and vinifies himself daily. Currently a member of Steve Grossman's band, Adam can be found at airport duty free shops across Europe testing neck pillows and dousing himself in aftershave. He promises the world with this band.

Tuesday 23 February (FUGAWE Jam Session)

Tom O’Halloran Trio

Tom O'Halloran - piano
Ben Waples - bass
Tim Firth - drums

Tom has been thinking a lot about trio playing - and might try some new directions. “Gifted with big ears, formidable technique and a free-wheeling conception, Tom O’Halloran should be on the must-hear list of anyone interested in hearing the best of what current Australian jazz has to offer.” - Mike Nock, Jan 2009.
