Tuesday 6th April
Steve McKenna 10pm - Steve McKenna Quartet

Steve McKenna - guitar
Mike Nock - keyboard
Gordon Rytmeister - drums
Phil Scorgie - electric bass
It’s an honour for us to present Steve and his stellar band at Jazzgroove. Steve started out playing and recording with Australian jazz guitar legend George Golla at age 18, and ended up playing fusion and touring Europe in the 90's with jazz heavy weight Bob Berg (ex Miles Davis). Steve has played on over 20 cds and has made quite an impact on Australian and European jazz over the last 30 years.

Brendan Berlach 8:30pm - The Brendan Berlach Quartet

Brendan Berlach - Tenor Sax
Harry Sutherland - Keys
Dave de Vries - Guitar
Nick Merideth - Drums
To follow the creative muse, and play saxophone full time, Brendan abandoned his chemical engineering degree in early 2003. Hear the latest update on his journey. Inspired lately by the deep grooves of Chris Potter’s Underground transfused with some explorations of European folk and operatic threads.

Tuesday 13th April
Sunchasers 10pm - Sun Chasers Collective

Eden Ottignon – bass
Mathew Ottignon – sax
Mick Stuart – 14 piece kalimba table
Aaron O’Neil – guitar
Alon Ilsar – drums
At the Peats Ridge Festival in 2008, Eden Ottignon built a mobile, solar powered generator to power a band. The band is often seen in the parks of Melbourne and Sydney, creating free and sustainable entertainment for the public. This freedom also radiates throughout the music, creating a part-improvised eclectic mix of groove based world music.

Casey Golden 8:30pm - Casey Golden Trio

Casey Golden – piano
Brendan Clark – bass
Rob Turner – drums
The Casey Golden Trio has been electrifying audiences since they first performed together some 18 months ago. With 2010 set to be a big year, these guys are at the top of their game. They have just recorded their debut album, to be released in the next few months. Expect virtuosic performances and original, high-energy trio music.

Tuesday 20th April
Kris Wanders/Andy Sugg 10pm - Kris Wanders/Andy Sugg Unit

Kris Wanders - tenor sax
Andy Sugg - tenor sax
Rory Brown - bass
Calvin Welch - drums
A twin tenor attack is more than welcome at JG, in this case provided by a bunch of legends. The group explores vibration, energy and strength in real time composition. The sounds are assembled as inter-dependent essential components, resulting in total immersion.

Zohar 8:30pm - Zohar’s Nigun

Daniel Weltlinger – fiddle
Daniel Pliner – keys
Alon Ilsar – drums
Tina Harris - bass
Jazz is an art form that can blend with just about any culture, any country, nation or people’s traditions  - a truly democratic music. Devoid of the usual cultural clichés, four Jewish guys present four very different understandings of an ancient yet ever metamorphosing culture and heritage. Shalom!

Wednesday 28th April
Baz 10pm - BAZ (Album Launch)

Aaron Flower - guitar
Karl Laskowski - sax
Ollie Miller - cello
Ben Romalis - lap slide
Zoe Hauptmannn - bass
Evan Mannell - drums
Baz is an exciting project by Aaron Flower simply titled after his affectionate nickname. The band started when Aaron won a recording session with the ABC after getting first place in the national jazz awards in 2007. Since then the band’s music has evolved into a seamless blend of styles, making Aaron’s music uniquely his own. Lady From Toulouse is their new album recorded in the 2nd half of 2009. The music has been called ‘filmic’ moving through different scenes, from the lush country sounds in ‘I Live In A Mansion’ to the rock angst of ‘Something’.

“Flower’s compositions are as masterful as his playing and the band moved freely through different moods” Jessica Nicolas-The Age

“Aaron Flower’s assured artistry won this years National Jazz Award for guitar” John Shand-Sydney Morning Herald.
