Stay warm with like-minded Sydney jazz hipsters
Like the Mamas & The Papas sang it, all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Ok, but Sydney is still a stunning town when the sun sets early, and an early sunset means even you early birds are shrouded in darkness entering your favourite Surry Hills place of entertainment. No, not the strip club upstairs.
Leading us down the windy slope to winter are old label favourites Leonie Cohen and Informal Troupe, stage regulars Amphibious and Showa 44 and an exciting new collection of familiar people, Greening From Ear to Ear.
Down at winter base camp, our June lineup sees the return of the ADs Pick; an allstar lineup paying a long-awaited tribute to the music of Roger Frampton, and those ripening chestnuts of Sydney music, Mike Nock and Jeremy Sawkins.

2012 Jazzgroove Summer Festival
Friday 13th – Sunday 15th January 2012
The Jazzgroove Association is extremely proud to bring you the 3rd Annual Jazzgroove Summer Festival.
From our humble beginning back in 2010 we are quickly establishing the 2nd weekend in January as an integral part of the Sydney Summer cultural calendar. Every year we aim to expand our events to give you the opportunity to experience all that Jazzgroove has to offer and this year is no different. Alongside our usual nightly programming, we will be continuing our highly successful FREE workshops and kids program at the Redfern Town Hall. On top of this we have added for the first time an opening night Q&A to take place at the Old 505 Theatre with some of the most respected members of the jazz community debating “The Sydney Sound.” Here at Jazzgroove we know firsthand the effects that a vitamin D deficiency can have, so in a bid to make our community not just culturally healthier, we are for the first time programming a Saturday afternoon of FREE outdoor gigs in the newly renovated Prince Alfred Park. Had enough yet? We haven’t! To top it all off we are very excited about to introduce a Jazzgroove first: the JARA Award (Jazzgroove Association Recording Artists Award). With the assistance of some of our awesome community partners we will be awarding a $10,000 prize enabling the recipient to record, produce and distribute a record of new works. So grab your tickets! See you at a gig!

2012 Festival Gala Night
This year we are extremely honoured to be able to present three award winning projects to take place over one night at the Tom Mann Theatre. The night will kick off with a screening of Emma Franz’s film Intangible Asset Number 82 which documents the search of Jazzgroove’s own Simon Barker in his search for one of the world’s greatest improvisers. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with both the director Emma Franz and her subject Simon Barker. Following the Q&A we will be presenting two Freedman Fellowship projects. The first will be by 2011 recipient Ben Hauptmann and his project “BOB”. The second by 2005 recipient, Jazzgroove Vice-President and all round nice guy Matt McMahon and his project “Paths and Streams.” Get Tickets.
Picnic in the Park
For over a year now we have all been watching as Prince Alfred Park has been given a nip and tuck. In celebration of its return to glory, we have programmed a Saturday afternoon of eco-friendly free shows.
The afternoon will be heralded in by the call of The Glorious Sousaphonics at 1pm, followed by a dance courtesy of The Sun-Chasers Collective at 2:15pm, culminating in the power of James Greening’s horn at 3:30pm with The World According To James. So make some sandwiches, grab a rug and head down for an afternoon not to be missed. Read more...

Workshops
One of the things we at Jazzgroove pride ourselves on is the creation of a community that allows the next generation direct exposure to the master musicians of the genre in a relaxed and creative environment. As such we are very happy to announce that at the 2012 Summer Festival we will be hosting two free workshops at the Redfern Town Hall presented by 2 National Jazz Award recipients.
Saturday 2pm – James Muller Trio feat Ben Vanderwal.
Sunday 2pm – Zac Hurren Trio.
Both workshops will be followed by a free concert. Read more...
"JARA" Award – Jazzgroove Association Recording Artists Award
With the assistance of our great friends at Eastside Radio, Free Energy Device, Ideas Farm and Venue 505 we are very excited to announce the inaugural 2012 JARA Award. The $10,000 JARA prize aims to provide an artist with the opportunity to record, produce and distribute an album of new work. Please see the JARA Award page to find out about all the details and requirements to submit your work, and stay tuned to find out about the four finalists who will be performing a FREE gig at Venue 505 on Sunday the 15th at 1pm. Read more.
Opening Night Talks
One of the newest editions to the Jazzgroove fold, the opening night talk will bring together the collective minds of some of Australia’s most respected voices in the jazz and improvised music scene. This event will take place in one of the most important spiritual homes for our community – The Old 505 Theatre - which has recently popped its head slightly above ground, to do for theatre what it has been doing for music for years. With extremely limited seating this is one to get in early for. Read more...
