2012 Jazzgroove Association Recording Artists Award
Jazzgroove, in association with Eastside Radio 89.7FM, is delighted to announce the inception of the Jazzgroove Association Recording Award, The JARA Award.
An emerging or existing composer/performer who wins the JARA Award receives a recording and promotions package to the value of $10,000 for the creation and presentation of new work to be released through Jazzgroove Records and broadcast of Eastside Radio.
The JARA Award is presented by Jazzgroove in association with Eastside Radio, and is generously supported by Venue 505, Free Energy Device, Ideas Farm and some very special donors.
The winner of the 2012 JARA Award is THE ALCOHOTLICKS
The four 2012 finalists were
THE ALCOHOTLICKS
20TH CENTURY DOG
PAUL CUTLAN
THE COOKING CLUB
We had a little conversation with Evan Mannell of the Alcohotlicks about the band's reaction to winning the JARA prize:
JG:What was your reaction to the announcement that the alcohotlicks had won the JARA?
EM: We were at the Gaelic club about to do another gig! Someone phoned through to Baz, there was some cheering, beers were bought and glasses were cheersed!
JG: What do the alcohotlicks plan to achieve with the JARA prize?
EM: We can now focus on finishing our next record. The financial burden is eased a little which means we can take our time to make sure it's exactly how we want it. It means we can make the album we want to make.
JG: How important do you think a competitive incentive like the JARA is to the Jazzgroove scene?
EM: Any incentive is good if it gets people motivated to be creative and really thinking about what they're doing. It's a great help to those who receive the award, but probably also quite helpful to anyone who took the time to submit a proposal. You have to solidify your ideas which can be confronting but rewarding.
And from the Artistic Directors:
The Inaugural JARA Award was a unique experience for everyone involved. As someone with Jazzgroove Records and the Sydney creative music scene in mind, it is extremely heartening to see our many great sponsors get behind the award, including Free Energy Device, Ideas Farm and Eastside Radio. And of course the concept wouldn't have even been floated if it wasn't for the generosity of an anonymous donor.
What is also encouraging is the number of diverse, original, moving and exciting new projects that this award has shone a spotlight on. The finalists were four shining examples of the entrants, which were outstanding in quality and number. Hopefully many of them will consider Jazzgroove Records when looking to release. The Sydney jazz and improvised music scene clearly has a lot to say, and countless ways to say it.
James Loughnan, co-artisic director, Jazzgroove.
